Principal's Bio

Image for Principal

Principal Louise Jones is in her 34th year as an educator, currently serving as the Principal of both McKinley Middle and McKinley Tech High School in Washington, DC.  She grew up on a tobacco farm in southwest Virginia and is the first in her family to earn a college degree.  She credits teachers taking a personal interest in her education and suggesting she apply for financial scholarships that made college possible for her.  She believes that education is the tool to provide opportunities and access for poor students to a better life.  It has been her route.  She has a Bachelor's degree in Education (History and Social Studies) from Virginia Tech and a Masters' Degree and a Doctorate in School Administration, with an emphasis in school law and school finance, from the University of Virginia.  She holds school administrator licenses in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, DC and a Superintendent's license in Virginia.

As a teacher she taught social studies, tutored pregnant teenagers and coached track and basketball. As an administrator she has been the principal of three middle schools and one high school prior to working in DC Public Schools.  She has experience with an International Baccalaureate Program, low performing schools, rural, suburban and urban schools, Gifted and Talented Education, and National Academy Foundation (NAF) Academies for Engineering, Information Technology and Hospitality and Tourism.  Awards and accomplishments include serving as principal of the top academic middle school in North Carolina for six years, receiving the Intel and Scholastic National Secondary Science School Award, and named the VITA Wireless Good Samaritan for North Carolina. Her previous high school in North Carolina was on the brink of a takeover by a North Carolina State Assistance Team when she arrived mid-year. Several years later this same school was named the Number 1 High School in North Carolina by US News and World Report in their annual ranking of schools.  In 2012 she was invited to participate in a White House Round Table with representatives from across the United States to discuss successful school reform.

Under her direction the past four years, McKinley Tech High School in DCPS has improved the graduation rate to 98 percent, lowered suspensions, improved attendance and drastically improved the rate of students who remain at the school after their freshman year. Dr. Jones was instrumental in developing a more rigorous school diploma that requires additional course credits, mandatory Advanced Placement courses, a required internship and a mandatory CTE program completer sequence.  The school was recently recognized in an article lauding it for top marks in the DC area for value added growth.

Dr. Jones lives in Dumfries, Virginia and enjoys time with her wife and family, especially her four grandchildren.  When she has free time she likes to take her Honda Gold Wing out and find scenic highways and country lanes.
