What is GSA? Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club, typically in a high school or middle school, which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia.
The McKinley Technology High School chapter of the GSA works in conjunction with the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, a youth leadership organization that connects school-based Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) to each other and community resources through peer support, leadership development, and training. GSA Network supports young people in starting, strengthening, and sustaining GSAs and builds the capacity of GSAs to:
Club Mission
- create safe environments in schools for students to support each other and learn about homophobia and other oppressions,
- educate the school community about homophobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and
- fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools.
- expose GSA students to a variety of issues regarding LGBTQ culture and provide increased exposure to positive role models within the community and community service events
Special schoolwide events:
Coffee talks once a month with guest speakers of the LGBTQ community
Participation in the national No Name Calling Week, including the creative expression contest
Over 150 students signed pledges to end name calling and violence here at McKinley
Partnership with SMYAL (Sexual Minority Youth League Association) to participate in district wide events aimed at networking and supporting LGBTQ youth
