McKinley Technology High School is a public city-wide 9-12th grade high school in the District of Columbia Public Schools in Washington, D.C. The school was originally an off shoot of Central High School (now Cardozo Senior High School), was called McKinley Technical High School and was located at 7th and Rhode Island NW in the District of Columbia. The United States Congress allocated $26 million in 1926 for the construction of the existing building at 2nd and T Street NE.
The school was exclusively for white residents of the City of Washington until integrated with other DC schools by an Executive Order by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in June of 1954. The school underwent a rapid change in the ethnic groups attending the school, similar to other schools in Washington, DC, and was a majority African-American school by 1960. The school continued to offer outstanding programs in printing, automotive technology, and other technical fields. Enrollment fell from a peak of 2400 in the late 1960's to approximately 500 in the mid-1990's. The school was selected for closure during the period of the congressionally authorized financial control board. The school was shuttered in June of 1997.
During the mayoral election campaign of 1998 then Chief Financial Officer Anthony A. Williams promised the city a technology focused high school to connect city youth with the growing technology basis of the Washington metro area economy. After assuming the position of Mayor in January, 1999 planning began on a school that did not have a decided location. In 2000 a decision was made to place the new school in the closed McKinley facility. Plans at that time included placing incubator companies in the facility and using the facility for professional development for the DC Public Schools and growing charter schools movement. In July of 2001 opening was delayed from 2002 to 2003. In January of 2002 Daniel Gohl assumed the role of Founding Principal, coming from the Science Academy of Austin in Austin, Texas. In October, 2002 the DC School Board delayed opening again to September, 2004. Another reason they closed was to renovate the older campus and to modernize the school. They thought a technology school should look top of the line. The school reopened on September 1, 2004 with grades 9 and 10. On August 28, 2006 the school had a complete program with grades 9-12 and an enrollment of 800 students.

My name is Prof. Maurice Iwu, Chairman Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).I am looking to buying a property enhanced with all appurtenances. The said sum was derived from an allocation given to my commission during the 2007 General Election which took place in my country.
As the Chairman of the commission, I am being petitioned and probed on allegations of misappropriating funds allocated to my commission during the election, hence my wish to urgently buy houses so that I can relocate my entire family out of my Country due to the on going probe. I will be grateful if you contact me with my private e-mail ID address as stated above as soon as possible.
Best Regards,
Prof. Maurice Iwu.

I can easily send an information packet to those interested...McKinley Tech Always... --- John A. McCauley, Jr.
NO EXCUSES JUST SOLUTIONS
I have so many memories of Tech and recently I took a tour of the new school with the class of 1979. Walking those halls again brought back all the memories, especially the Auditorium which is still intact. A lot of the school has changed and been renovated. We had a good thing going in those years and memories are still so fresh!!

Thank you.
A large group of us left TAFT Jr High and entered Mckinley in the 9th grade in 1962. I am blessed to have friendships that were made then that still last today.
McKinley was a wonderful school with great and fond memories.
As Martina and Dee mentioned we hope you will all join our Class of '66 at our Oldies dance at the Elks Lodge on August 15. Contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Hey fellow Techite's class of 80 to 82!!!!!!!!!!!
I truly enjoyed the ceremony and the opportunity to see just how much McKinley has meant to so many; and now it seems to be prepared to provide even more great educational and career opportunities in the coming years. I was overwhelmed and took almost 200 pictures during that visit and would love to share with anyone who would like to see them. I never realized the amazing views we had of the city from almost every window and doorway in the school...and now that the recent restoration has occurred, the interior views are even more beautiful.
We had the privilege of having a student-staffed bank and store along with hands-on training in the office, added to the many academic clubs and organizations that allowed us to grow in ways other schools did not provide. Even back then, McKinley was the school students from all over the city wanted to attend. Boy, did we have a gold mine!
I don't know just how or why over the years 'Tech' lost that flavor, but I am certainly glad someone had the foresight to step in and re-build this historic structure and give our youth the wonderful opportunity along with the excellent education we were given that enabled us to prosper as productive and vital members of society.
"On McKinley, on McKinley...victory is our aim. Winners all we'll heed the call and raise our name to fame..."
