Students who choose the Mass Media option should love to read, write, be outgoing, have an interest in research and using technology to produce media, and be able to multi task and meet deadlines. Homework is essential to read course materials and write articles and scripts in order participate in discussion and feedback during class. Mass Media I (sophomore year) During the first advisory, students will gain a clear understanding of what media is, how it has evolved and where it’s headed in the future, before being given an overview of ethics, an idea of post secondary and career options. In the second through forth advisories, students will be introduced to and learn the basics of writing; interviewing & reporting; and equipment & software used to produce media in print (news, advertising & periodicals), audio (radio and music), television (news and commercial) and video (using film techniques) formats. Mass Media II (junior year) Each advisory will be used to further explore and expound upon the writing, interviewing & reporting skills introduced in Mass Media I. One advisory will be dedicated to each media area (print, audio, television and video/film) with the final exam in both exam and project format. Mass Media III (junior year) This course is taken in conjunction with Mass Media III. Students will be required to use the articles and scripts created in Mass Media II to produce print, audio, television and video/film production. A variety of software will be used to train students in layout, design and editing. Mass Media IV (senior year) Students will utilize the skills mastered in Mass Media II & III to create and maintain various media formats within McKinley. Students will choose an area of primary interest and rotate in various roles to produce the desired format. Print students will work in various capacities (reporters, photographers, editors, etc.) to maintain the multimedia publication online; audio students will produce various segments that will include original music; television students will produce the McKinley news show; and film/video students will direct and cast to produce various formats. All productions will be created from script to desired media format by the students, and will be authored to DVD portfolios.
