"There are strong associations between independent reading and reading achievement, and many researchers believe that independent reading plays a key role in the development of reading fluency (speed and ease of reading), vocabulary, background knowledge, and even spelling. Not surprisingly, motivation also is associated with independent reading; children who are interested in and motivated to read tend to do more independent reading."

-Louise Spear-Swerling

The McKinley Technology HS Library Book Club aims to encourage students to engage in independent reading on a wide variety of topics and across several genres. The book club reads a different book each month and when finished reading the book, we meet the writer and engage in a lunch-time discussion about the text. Currently we have 40 active members. Books and the writer visits are free of cost through the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools Program. Refreshments for the monthly lunches are provided courtesy of the DC Daughters of the American Revolution.
