What is the best way to communicate with the McKinley Admissions Office?

You can contact Kristin Jarrett, our Director of Admissions, at with any questions. During the busy Admissions season, members of our team are conducting school visits and are often out of the office. Therefore, voicemails are returned intermittently. However, all emails will be returned within 48 hours.

Do you accept new students for all grades?

No. We only accept new 9th and 10th grade students.


I don't have a computer at home. How do I apply?

Families that do not have access to a computer can go to a neighborhood library or contact the My School DC Team at (202) 888-6336 Mon-Friday, 9am-5pm or at All applications must be submitted online. In addition, you will need to monitor your email for application updates.


What kind of student should apply to McKinley Tech?

All students are welcome to apply. However, students who meet our admissions requirements, will be invited to interview at McKinley. The scholar who succeeds at McKinley is determined, hardworking, responsible, in attendance regularly, and seeks helps when needed.


How is my GPA calculated?

The applicant's GPA is calculated using the transcript from the last full year of school and is based on their performance in the four core subjects (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies). 


How do I sign-up for an interview?

Students will be contact by email for next steps in scheduling an admissions interview. Please note that due to the volume of applications, we will be unable to offer interviews to all applicants. However, students who are not invited to interview can still be admitted to McKinley. 


What do I need to know about the interview?

Interviews will be conducted by current McKinley students and staff members. We encourage students to come prepared to interview and present their best selves!


Do you offer Shadow Visits?

Due to the large number of applicants, it is not possible to offer shadow visits to students until they have been admitted to McKinley. At that time, there will be a limited number of seats available for students to attend a Shadow Day. Further information about this will be provided to admitted students.
