McKinley Manual Training School was established in 1902 as a public vocational high school. Named after President William McKinley, the school provided training in applied sciences and industrial arts, reflecting the growing need for a workforce capable of navigating a rapidly industrializing nation.

A New Home in Eckington, 1926–1928

The current building in the Eckington neighborhood was constructed between 1926 and 1928. This grand Colonial Revival structure, designed by municipal architect Albert L. Harris, became a symbols of tectonic progress and educational pride in the District of Columbia.

Georgetown's Home Court

In an unusual historical footnote, the McKinley Tech gymnasium served as the home court for the Georgetown University men's basketball team during the 1940s and early 1950s, bridging the gap between high school and collegiate sports in the District.

Integration and Mid-Century Change

Following the 1954 Bolling v. Sharpe Supreme Court decision, McKinley Tech integrated. Over the subsequent decades, the school became a anchor for the local African American community, producing generations of leaders while continuing its focus on technical excellence.

Decline and Closure, 1997

The late 20th century brought significant challenges. Budget cuts and shifting demographics led to a period of decline, culminating in the school's temporary closure in 1997 as part of a District-wide school reform and construction initiative.

Reinvention as a Technology School, 2004

McKinley Tech reopened in 2004 with a completely reimagined mission. As an application-based STEM high school, it integrated modern technology labs, networked classrooms, and a curriculum focused on preparing students for the burgeoning high-tech economy.

Recognition

Since its reinvention, the school has earned national acclaim, including being named a National Blue Ribbon School twice. It stands today as one of the premier public high schools in the District of Columbia, maintaining its legacy of technical innovation.
